Essential Oils

Essential OilsWelcome to the spectacular world of Essential Oils! These wonderful gifts of nature are very valuable and can be used daily in so many different ways.

What are Essential Oils? Quite simply, they are potent extracts from the roots, stems, leaves and barks of plants. They provide powerful support for overall health and wellness and have been used for thousands of years safely and effectively. They have extremely small molecules that easily cross the blood-brain barrier and work within the limbic system of our brain, which is responsible for our emotions, behavior, long term memory, and our olfactory sense (which is why aromatherapy is especially efficacious).

How to Use Essential Oils: Each person is unique and will experience the effects of oils differently, but there are 3 methods to use doTerra Essential Oils:

  1. Aromatically (Inhalation)—this is done by dispersing the oils in the air through a diffuser, which stimulates the olfactory sense and travels directly to the limbic system, and can result in improved immune and respiratory function, reduce mold and unpleasant odors, and enhance mood.
  2. Topically—the oils will work by absorption through the skin, our body’s largest organ, and will help relieve pain, tension, skin rashes, dry itchy skin, allergic reactions, and insect bites, to name a few. Massaging the oils, especially on the affected areas and on the soles of the feet, has been shown to reduce or eliminate symptoms quickly. Applying a carrier oil locally on top of the essential oil will help the oils penetrate more deeply into the cells and tissues, as well as the application of warm or cold compresses to the area where the essential oils are applied.
  3. Internally—this method MUST be used with caution and recommended with the guidance of a Certified Essential Oils or Health Coach. Internal use is another very effective use of the essential oils to help with symptoms and health challenges.

What to Look for: Quality is critical, as most oils are not tested through the entire process from harvest to bottling, and most are not completely free of toxins (even if they are labeled “organic”). It’s very important to understand the distillation and production process, and I chose to partner with doTerra because of the stringent quality control and purity that they guarantee with each and every bottle they produce.

Essential Oil Essentials

Essential Oil Essentials – January 2020: Dry Winter Skin

Essential Oils effectively help with moisturizing and soothing dry skin, cuts and abrasions caused by severe dryness.

Top 3 oils to remedy this:

  • Frankincense
  • Lavender
  • Geranium

Apply one or combination of these oils “neat” to the skin (no diluting with carrier oils): 3 drops on affected area(s), or mix with carrier oil of your choice: Fractionated Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Almond Oil.

Add to shampoo, moisturizers at a recommended dilution of 2% (download dilution chart here).

Note: During the winter months I would frequently get cuts on my fingers due to dry air and having my hands immersed in water. Applying 1 drop Frankincense neat on my open cut(s) 2x/day has significantly reduced healing time, pain, and I now get fewer cuts than I did before I regularly used Frankincense.

Essential Oil Essentials – February 2020: Benefits of using Essential Oils Pre & Post Workouts

Using essential oils can really help you prepare before your workouts and recover afterwards.

Pre-Workout: To help your body get “warmed up” and create the heat to burn calories more efficiently (a process known as thermogenesis), apply 2 drops of Lemongrass Essential Oil to the bottom of both feet before a workout. In addition to boosting energy, Lemongrass can also help with endurance during your workout.

Post-Workout: Add 3-5 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil to moisturizing lotion or apply to directly on muscles. Massage with movement toward the heart and be sure to apply carrier oil of your choice (fractionated coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil) on top of the Eucalyptus to help it penetrate more deeply into the muscles and tissues and to avoid any skin reactions. Eucalyptus helps to break down the lactic acid buildup, which is responsible for muscle soreness after workouts. It is the perfect solution to help your body pre and post workouts!

Essential Oil Essentials – October 2020: Fighting Mold & Mildew

During the Fall, when many regions begin to cool down, mold spores rise. For millions of years, plants have defended against mold in the environment to survive. Mold thrives in damp, cool areas, and there are numerous different species of mold.

Essential Oils can be effective in helping fight against mold & mildew in your home, on clothing and furniture, and your body. They can be applied topically on skin, but you must proceed with caution and dilute with a carrier oil (download FREE dilution guide here). For internal use with doTerra essential oils, it’s best to consult with a certified health coach or essential oil coach.

Diffusing essential oils can also be an effective way to combat mold and is effective in cleansing and purifying the air (and delightfully pleasing to the olfactory sense). These oils can be added to a spray bottle and diluted with water to spray on linens, furniture, and into the air.

The top 5 mold fighting essential oils are:

►Melaleuca (Tea Tree)

It is very important to note that the oils listed above are “hot” oils and must be used with caution when coming into contact with skin, as they can cause burning sensation. Be sure to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after using these oils.

Essential Oil Essentials – November 2020:  Addressing Holiday Anxiety

As the holidays approach, unfortunately many people begin to experience anxiety in anticipation of family gatherings, gaining weight, and all kinds of negative connotations & thoughts that the holiday season can trigger.

An excellent way to help prepare for the holidays is to plan and keep our goals realistic and keep our anxiety in check. One of the best ways to reduce and manage anxiety is to use essential oils aromatically. I like to diffuse a mix of top notes (lighter oils with citrus, sweet & fruity aromas), middle notes (usually floral & woodsy scents) and base notes (rich, heavier, earthy oils) for the most efficacious blends.

Here’s a couple of my favorite aromatic blends for anxiety:

Vetiver (base note): 4 drops

Cinnamon (middle note): 6 drops

Wild Orange (top note): 5 drops

Frankincense (base note): 4 drops

Lavender (middle note): 4 drops

Eucalyptus (middle note): 4 drops

Bergamot (top note): 5 drops

I encourage you to get creative and make your own blends. Diffuse daily, relax & enjoy the holidays!

Essential Oil Essentials – December 2020: Gingerbread Recipe with Essential Oils

It’s a Christmas tradition in my house to make gingerbread & gingerbread cookies. For those that love gingerbread, below is a fantastic recipe. Adding essential oils gives this recipe (and all recipes) a super-charged boost of flavor, and while baking, the aroma is beyond delightful!

Gingerbread Recipe:

Dry Ingredients

Mix dry ingredients together

  • 2.5 cups Flour
  • 1.5 tsp Baking Soda (non-aluminum)
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Ginger
  • 1/2 tsp Cloves
  • 1/2 tsp Sea Salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Coconut Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Grass-fed Butter (Kerry Gold is an excellent choice)
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 cup Molasses
  • 1 cup Hot Water
  • 5 drops doTerra Ginger essential oil
  • 2 drops doTerra Cinnamon essential oil
  • 2 drops doTerra Clove essential oil

Cream butter & sugar, add beaten egg & molasses. Then add the essential oils & blend well. Next add the dry ingredients. Add hot water.

Mix all ingredients until smooth; batter will be soft & runny. Pour in greased & floured 13×9 pan. Bake 35 minutes at 325 degrees. Enjoy!

Essential Oil Essentials – January 2021:  Relieve Under-eye Inflammation

After the holidays, many people experience inflammation all over the body. Overindulging in food, sweets/alcohol, chronic sinusitis and allergies are the main culprits driving the inflammatory response. Under-eye inflammation is particularly bothersome, and is also aggravated by dry indoor heat.

Since I struggled for years with sinusitis, I was always seeking natural ways to help reduce inflammation and dark circles under my eyes.

Here’s a blend that I’ve found success with when my under-eyes are inflamed from lack of sleep, crying, seasonal allergic reactions, or if my sinuses do act up (it’s seldom these days):

In a 5 ml roller bottle combine the following:

►doTerra Frankincense 8 drops

►doTerra Lavender 6 drops

► doTerra Hawaiian Sandalwood 4 drops

►Fill the rest of the bottle with carrier oils of either almond or argon oil (these oils also have properties that soothe skin)

Apply twice daily: in the morning after cleansing your face (before applying moisturizer & make-up) & before bedtime on clean skin. Frankincense & Lavender are both very rich in terpenes, which are large volatile compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties, and also help defend against bacteria that cause skin eruptions, and can help minimize appearance of fine lines. Sandalwood helps to hydrate and smooth the skin, as well as fight acne.
