Summertime…the sun is shining, the weather is warm and we spend lots of time outdoors. But we must also remember that it’s important to protect ourselves from the harmful rays of the sun and from insects. What products do you use to protect yourself and your family and to stay safe? I choose natural and organic protection and I’ll tell you why…
When I first was introduced to Lemongrass Spa products, I was suffering from skin and eye allergies that came upon me quite suddenly. In order to understand how and why I developed these allergies, I had to identify the cause(s). Upon researching, I learned that just about all of the skincare, haircare, make-up and household products I was using contained harsh and harmful chemicals that were negatively impacting me and causing these allergic reactions. As I slowly replaced all of these products with chemical-free, non-toxic products, my skin began to improve and eventually the allergic reactions subsided. I was intrigued by this and decided to research further.
FDA’s Role in Skin Care Industry
One question kept nagging at me–why are such harmful chemicals permitted for use in nearly all personal hygiene and cleaning products? This began my quest to help educate people about these highly toxic chemicals lurking in nearly all products people use every day. It was shocking to realize that the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) does not closely monitor the skincare and make-up industry—no one is regulating what manufacturers are “hiding” in their products. Because of the lack of industry regulations and guidelines, skincare companies do not fully disclose all ingredients in products, especially if there are only trace amounts (even trace amounts can cause allergic reactions for many sensitive people). Many of the so-called “safe” ingredients are indeed being absorbed into skin and wreaking havoc on the health of many Americans, unbeknownst to them.
Sunscreens & Moisturizers
With summer upon us, please be advised that some of the most irritating products are sunscreens and moisturizers. Perhaps the biggest culprit is Oxybenzone, a chemical ingredient used in most sunscreens on the market. It’s been shown to damage DNA, is an endocrine disrupter (think thyroid and adrenal gland dysfunction) and is even harmful to marine life and oceans.1 Parabens are another chemical widely used in sunscreens and moisturizers, and like oxybenzone, they are also known endocrine disruptors, as well as possibly being linked to breast cancer.2 Propylene Glycol is yet another very popular toxic substance that’s mostly used in moisturizers, deodorants and shampoos, and has reportedly contributed to liver and kidney problems, as well as allergies and skin dermatitis.3
Dangers of Insect Repellants
Unfortunately, we also are exposed to insects during the summer months, and the products to repel them are highly toxic, particularly Deet. Although Deet is deemed safe by the CDC and WHO, research on mice has shown significant exposure can affect the nervous system and cause symptoms like slurred speech, tremors, and seizures.4 Picaridin is the other most common ingredient used in bug sprays, and even though it’s not quite as toxic as Deet, studies have shown it can cause mouth and eye irritation, and vomiting.5
Non-Toxic Alternatives for Summer Fun
The good news is that Lemongrass Spa offers affordable, non-toxic, organic, and gluten-free alternatives for sunscreens, moisturizers, skincare and make-up for all. Below is a trio of safe and effective products that nourish and shield skin from the elements outdoors.
- The sunscreen is a Sport Stick with SPF 30 that’s formulated with mango butter, shea and beeswax to protect and moisturize the skin. A hint of Vanilla essential oil is added for a light scent. Also includes non-nano zinc oxide (14.8%), titanium dioxide (7.4%) and bronze mica for color. Convenient 1 oz size is great for the entire family and all year-round outdoor sports. A natural mineral formula that is environmentally friendly and does not harm ocean and marine life!
- Bug-A-Boo is an effective insect repellent containing aloe, geranium essential oil, citronella and cedarwood. Free of Deet and chemically derived insecticides, kid-safe and environmentally friendly. Consult with your pediatrician for use on infants under 12 months old. Family pack also available and includes: 1 Bug-A-Boo 4 oz spray, a 2 oz spray, and 1 Bug-A-Boo Stick.
- Aloe Vera Soothing Gel calms and cools irritated, sunburned skin. It’s made with pure aloe and is enriched with antioxidant spirulina that soothes and hydrates the skin, helping to retain moisture and promote healing. Can be used as an all-over moisturizer or as a spot treatment.
